This is a story from long ago, one of castles in the Old World, untamed frontiers in the New, and an enduring call to adventure that echoes through centuries.
It begins with the Van Horn ancestors in the Netherlands, where sturdy medieval castles still stand as testaments to timeless qualities of unyielding foundations, relentless drive, and faith in destiny. For the Van Horn bloodline, excellence was never accidental. It was built: stone by stone, dream by dream, through passion for trade, a frontiersman’s spirit, and above all, by the courage to answer the unknown.

Separated by oceans and eras, that same ethos whispered to later generations. In the early 1600s, Dutch settlers bearing the Van Horn name arrived in the fledgling colony of New Amsterdam. Amid swampy, primordial landscapes, where waterways twisted endlessly, and vast forests floated on the horizon, they saw not obstacles, but opportunity. A small band of explorers chose to stay, taming the wild into farmland, digging canals, and establishing a harbor as their humble outpost grew into a thriving settlement. This was the seed of what would become New York City. Echoes remain today where the name Wall Street traces and references their early walls, Harlem recalls the forested high ground they named Nieuw Haarlem, and Central Park’s meadows overlay pastures once grazed by their cattle

Centuries later, in 1817, the call to adventure rang again. This time it was for Judge James Van Horn. Drawn to the edge of America’s expanding frontier in Niagara County, New York, he settled with his wife and nine children. They built businesses, mills, and a vibrant farm community, transforming untamed land into the town of Newfane. Their brick Georgian-style home, the Van Horn Mansion, is; still standing and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It serves as a living monument to that legacy of stewardship and vision.
Time marched on. By the early 1960s, the “Great Frontier” had shifted to the stars. Samuel Eugene Van Horn, known simply as Sam, answered his call to adventure as destiny summoned once more. A designer, instrumental in modern airplane wings, he turned his expertise to the critical challenge of protecting spacecraft from the inferno of atmospheric re-entry. His work contributed to the heat shields that brought American astronauts safely home in charred but intact capsules. These relics are now preserved at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. Sam, a man who cherished a fine smoke, would have smiled to see his family’s spirit of quality and foundation-building carried forward into the meticulous art of cigar making.

For Van Horn Cigars, the cigar family, that same call to adventure bridges continents and centuries: from Dutch castles and New World frontiers to the lush, volcanic valleys of Estelí, Nicaragua, home to the masterful Ruiz family of cigar artisans. Here, generations of tradition meet the Van Horn ethos of premium tobacco, inherited, cultivated, and shared with unwavering passion.
The path of these two great families merged in 2024, in the verdant hills of Esteli, where the wind carries the unmistakable aroma of cured tobacco. This is the place and the moment when one of the most anticipated collaborations in the world of premium cigars was born: the union between the cigar families of Van Horn and Ruiz.
Van Horn Cigars, an American boutique brand known for its bold and elegant blends, inspired by the heritage of explorers and empire builders, answered the call to adventure. We went searching for more than just tobacco leaves; we wanted a partner who shared our philosophy of uncompromising excellence, tradition elevated to contemporary art, and a deep respect for Nicaraguan heritage. This is when destiny stepped forward, introducing the third generation of the Ruiz family: Lenin Ruiz, son of Marvin Ruiz, who had transformed the small family factory founded by his father into a benchmark of artisanal quality. Ruiz Cigars was already synonymous with robust cigars boasting of volcanic notes of deep cocoa and subtle spices, all wrapped in the passion that Juan Luis Ruiz Lopez had sown decades earlier.
The spark ignited between our two cigar families as we, Van Horn Cigars, quickly realized that the tobaccos of Ruiz were exceptional in every way, from the family’s signature blend with a Nicaraguan Habano Criollo wrapper to their other incredible offerings. Simply put, we were ‘blown away’. We quickly realized that these were more than just premium cigars; they were “living history”. The Ruiz family, in turn, admired the Van Horn prototypes of blends with international influences, hints of American sweetness, and a complexity reminiscent of the great trade routes of the 19th century.
Through our shared passion for cigars, we had many conversations and meetings that ran for days, weeks, and months, as we pored over every aspect of plantation life, from the rolling workshops to the plantation fields to endless testing. Eventually, we, the cigar families Ruiz and Van Horn, decided to forge new frontiers in cigar-making by creating a joint cigar line: Van Horn Cigars and The Georgian. The project focused on unique tobacco combinations, each representing a bridge between continents and generations.
